Looking at sculptures and paintings in person or in a museum rather than looking at them on a flat screen can drastically change the way you take in the artwork in many different ways. One good example is the Ladder for Booker T. Washington by Martin Puryear, which, in person, was vastly larger than I expected. When looking at an artwork in the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, you get to observe details and witness different focal points that you would most likely miss looking at a computer. In Mart Puryear’s artwork, size, focal point, and surroundings can be wildly miscommunicated through a photograph. Size is a very important aspect in Ladder for Booker T. Washington, which is why I was astonished on how large the artwork was in person, compared to images that I’ve seen online.…

The sculpture Triad of King Mycerinus and Two Goddesses, which resides at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, was excavated from The Temple of Mycerinus in Giza and was created between 2548 - 2530 BCE, during the reign of Mycerinus. Made from greywacke, an incredibly coarse, dark sandstone, this sculpture uses variation in texture, incorrect scale, and line to draw attention to King Mycerinus in relation to the two divinities, and thus is an example of royalty as divinity. Overall, this sculpture depicts the goddess of the Hare Nome, the goddess Hathor, and the King Mycerinus (in that order from left to right), all carved from a single block of greywacke. Additionally, this is an example of a high relief sculpture, meaning that the sculpture is…

A large scale outdoor public installation/sculpture in my area is among one of my favorite pieces of art. It is located in the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum, the outdoor sculpture museum near Barton Springs pool and Zilker Park, in the Zilker neighborhood of Austin, Texas. Titled “The Kiss,” this sculpture was created by Charles Umlauf in 1970 and is assumed to be officially installed around 1991. After Charles Umlauf and his wife, Angie, gave the city of Austin their home, Charles’ studio and 168 pieces of sculpture back in 1985, the city then built and established the museum in 1991 and put its sculptural pieces on display for the people of Austin to enjoy. The work I choose from the museum was a Bearded Bull’s Head from 2600 - 2450 BC. This was from the Sumerian, Early Dynastic III period. The bull’s head is made from copper with lapis lazuli and shell inlay which can be seen in the eyes of the bull. Since this was made from a valuable material it is thought to be used as a lintel over a door since it is too heavy for a piece of furniture. With the age of the object, it has pieces broken off of it such as the beard has only half left on.…

Monuments are structures which are built in order to commemorate a famous person or event. The Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from France to the United States, is visited by approximately four million people a year and is seen as a symbol of freedom and democracy to many. Although the Statue of Liberty is a good example of a successful monument, not all monuments meet such qualifications. When creating a monument, agencies should factor in what it will memorialize, its location, and its quality.…

Out of all the artists depicted in the documentary, I’ve found the work of Cai Guo-Qiang to be the most interesting and skillful. I love how he uses gun powder, a material in which he calls “uncontrollable” and “destructive”, to create unique pieces of work. The art is in both in the inferno presentation and the left-over design on the paper. The way the paper yellows and the flow of lines in his work resembles a lot like the ancient Chinese artwork on scrolls. Instead of just drawing out and painting the art, Cai takes his time to set up the material and then takes the chance in how it comes out.…

However, reflecting upon some of my favorite experiences and sights I’ve seen I’ve begun to see a reoccurring theme. I frequent Hyde Park on a semi regular basis. Despite nearly 2000 years separating the creation of Polykleitos’s Doryphoros and Donatello’s David, the two sculptures shared astonishingly similar features, yet both remained true to the stylistic characteristics of their respective time periods. These artists incorporated both predictable and cutting edge ideas into their works. Doryphoros, also known as the Spear Bearer, was a marble reinvention of Polykleitos’s original bronze sculpture circa 450 - 440 BCE. Most ancient Greek statues were made of bronze; because bronze was so valuable and could easily be melted down to make weapons, very few of the original figures remain.…

The painting I chose was Frank Stella’s “Flin Flon VIII”. It is an acrylic piece on canvas characterized by a mixture of curving and straight lines that interlock, vibrant colors, and an emphasis on the circle in the middle of the canvas. A huge quantity of negative space is present in the painting and the painting emits a smooth texture. The painting is one hundred and eight inches squared, making it one of the largest paintings in the San Diego Art Museum. Its size projects itself on the viewer overwhelming them with its color and size.…
