Lareau's Analysis

When reflecting on children’s educational outcomes, including my own, it is interesting to notice that socioeconomic status plays a detrimental role in predicting educational success. Likewise, Lareau’s three explanations of social class between parents and schools enhance our understating of the connections. Lareau challenges the assumption that working class families do not value school or that they believe school is not that important. She argues that, indeed, working class families do value school and consider schools as an important aspect of their children’s lives. Similarly, Lareau disagrees with the notion that schools discriminate against working class students. Schools try to access student’s needs and, therefore, try to provide extracurricular
