Basic Training began with physical training, "PT" every day. Each day began with a mile run before going to breakfast in the Mess Hall PT consisted of Push-ups, sit-ups, running and more running, ptus normal exercises without weight training. He had rope courses and other types of exercise equipment. He would have 10 mile runs in fuEt gear and 20 mile hikes. Fort Jackson was always hot. The Army goal was to teach them how to survive and win in any combat situation.

HE befriended one the dog handlers and he helped him get assigned to the dogs. Military dogs were trained in the United States and he had to be trained how to work with the dog. His dog was named Blaze and he was fast. Working with Blaze was one of the high-lights of his lifetime. He was trained to receive commands verbally, silently with hand signals.
