INTRODUCTION Language samples of children are helpful to see what stage they are at in their language development. By looking at different aspects of their normal speech you can get a pretty clear picture of where the child is at. The language sample that I am going to be talking about is on a little girl names Olivia. She is four years old and is talking to her Aunt. They are playing with some of her toys in a good environment. I feel that this is a good language sample because it is in an environment she is used too with someone she knows.
SEMANTICS
Semantics is the study of word meaning. For her age she is one track with her word order. She successfully demonstrates that she is able to place words in Agent + Action, Action + Object,

Olivia demonstrates that she can properly organize words in a sentence. She shows that she can use words like ‘in’, ‘on’, and articles in these sentences here, “We went in the back (um) of the store,” “I just use the wedgie on my skies,” “And I have a carriage.” This is common for her age, but she does not, however, demonstrate that she can properly use a past regular verb that send in -ed. This is normal for her age, but since she is able to understand time she should be able to use a word that sends in -ed. I conclude that she would be able to use a word with an -ed ending and she did not get the opportunity in this language sample. It would make sense that should count used an -ed form properly because she used a past tense time word when she used the word before, as I previously mentioned in my …show more content…
Olivia demonstrates many times that she understand the word order in a sentence. She shows that she is able to properly combine together two thoughts with the use of the word and in this sentence here, “Yeah, (cause they) cause they put a note up and said you can hold the bunnies.” Here you see Olivia put two sentences together, the subject and verb in the first part is this put, and in the second part of the sentences the subject and verb are you and hold. Some children at her age can do this, but it is good that she is demonstrating this at her age. Looking at the sample of a whole you conclude that her MLU is 4.36, which puts her at Brown Stage 5. This is an advanced stage for her
