The language of responsibility is defined as “The speaker's willingness to take responsibility for their beliefs and feelings.”(Adler and Proctor 169) In The Help there are many instances of the language of responsibility. One example is when the white women create the “Home Help Sanitation Initiative.” This is an attempt to enact a policy that requires all white houses to have separate bathrooms for all hired help. The name of the initiative hides the true meaning behind it because it sounds like a nice thing when one just hears the name. However this initiative reinforces the white women's prejudices against black housekeepers.
