In the article The language of persuasion, one of the tenets the author eluded to was that one must use their persuasive power effectively and to clearly understand which choice, personalized or socialized power is the chosen path of influence (Martin). In other words, what is the desired outcome? To become an effective leader or to become a leader who is driven by rewards associated with personalized power. Before we delve any further, we should understand that power is the root of influencing others regardless of the form that it takes. The article portrays Trump synonymous with personal power, the power over others which may be as more self-serving versus Gandi with his use of socialized power infers that he used his power of influence to build on relationships …show more content…
By striving to achieve a high level of self-awareness we should automatically harness internal mindfulness by selecting the power we choose to embrace and lead others with. With the absence of self-awareness and consideration of how we may influence others, the likelihood of potential power abuse could occur coupled with possible ethical challenges.
Mills articulates that persuasion starts with credibility and credibility is a result of cultivating trust and expertise. Individuals who are successful with acting against their own self-interest gives pause that if a person has nothing personal to gain, and nothing to lose with persuasion, we may be more apt to trust and find the person to be credible (Mills H. , 2000).
