Introduction
I am enrolled in an elementary education program with plans to graduate with my Bachelor’s Degree in December of 2017. Once I am certified, I want to teach 2nd or 3rd grade students in a low income school, preferably the one in my neighborhood. After three years, I want to pursue my Master’s Degree in Special Education. I want to work in a special education classroom specializing with children who were categorized as having an emotional disturbance. My reasoning behind this is that I have a child who is categorized as having an emotional disturbance, and I have had problems getting him help in the school district. Some of the things I have learned from my girl scout has helped me when he has a meltdown. At home, I have four children. The oldest developed anxiety due to ptsd from date rape. She also has trichotillomania. My oldest boy has reactive attachment disorder, as well as schizoaffective disorder. Combine all of this with attention deficit disorder and oppositional defiance and it makes for an interesting life. My youngest has dislexia and attention deficit hyperactiviy disorder. My youngest daughter has anger and aggression issues and attention deficit disorder. Luckily, medication does help her to control herself in social situations for the most part. Diabetes is very prevalent in our family, as are complications with the disease; therefore, I have close family members who are blind and who have amputations. All of these are challenges, but they do not define the individual. Each person has a unique personality and life goals. I had the opportunity to volunteer at Make Promises Happen camp this semester. This camp really helped me narrow down what areas I might want to pursue employment for in the future. It also enabled me to work one on one with a student who has Down’s
