The essay mainly explores how language extinction of all languages except English will have a deleterious effect on the world population. The three outcomes that I have covered are loss of cultural identity, loss of literary works and loss of diversity.
Firstly, language is intrinsically connected to cultural identity which forms global perspectives and shapes the personality and outlook of individuals and groups. The complete domination of a single language will lead to the erosion of cultural identities which are tied to linguistic identities. The advocation of English as a supreme language legitimizes the erosion of all other languages and identities which not only morally decrepit in the modern era of plurality but also poses grave challenges for world peace and unity. It is assumed that a single language leads to peace and unity, but evidence has pointed out that such inferences are not well-founded. As stated in the lecture, indigenous people have a deeper understanding of their environment. As language influences a person’s way of thinking, extinction of a language results in loss of social groups which further results in loss of deeper knowledge and skills possessed by various groups. A group of people living in the city have a view that is different from that of an indigenous tribe. For instance, the tribe of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India speaking Akka Bo, believe in living and working in groups. The tribe has a common belief of living in groups and believes that working together will result in prosperity. On the other hand, the group of people living in the city prefer living individually. This change in the way of thinking of various groups is directly influenced by the language spoken by the group. Moreover, if only English exists then people will have the same way of thinking towards a situation. This will prevent addition of a new dimension, hence hampering
