In this act, Ophelia tries to find out what Hamlet trying to accomplish in the play he’s directing with players. As Ophelia approaches Hamlet, she says, “My lord, I have remembrances of yours that I have longed long to redeliver. I pray you now receive them.” (Shakespeare, 129). Ophelia is saying that she has some moment of Hamlet’s that she has beening meaning to give back to him and she wants to give it to Hamlet. Hamlet replies, “No, not I. I never gave you ought.” Hamlet refused the offer and says it wasn’t him. He never gave her anything. Hamlet finds out Ophelia is being played by Polonius and Claudius to find out his plans. So, he says, “if you be honest and fair, your honesty should admit no discourse to your beauty...Ay, truly for power of beauty..I did love you once.” Hamlet is saying that since beauty’s power can more easily change a good girl into a whore than the power of goodness can change a beautiful girl into a virgin. This used to be a great puzzle, but now he has solved it. He used to love Ophelia. It shows that even though Hamlet loves Ophelia, he knows it is not worth it. He knowns Ophelia’s being played and he doesn’t want to get played by Ophelia. Here, we see that Hamlet and Ophelia have a dominant relationship where Hamlet dominated
