Language, as one of the most prevailing human symbol of communication, is an essential source of identity in all cultures. One of the many ways in which identity can be assimilated is through one’s native and foreign languages, education, culture, and way of life. We may identify others by their dominant language and their speaking manners or expressive styles depending on ethnic, origin, social context, gender, and many other factors.
For instance, as Mr. Baron appoints in his article, American English has dialects which result from the interaction of people from a specific geographical location. Language uses may also vary within members of a shared particular professional field with the employment of “jargons” as a way to narrow down senses and make more efficient their internal communication process. A great classic example of this comes alive in one of my favorite’s Shakespeare comedies “The Merchant of Venice”, where several characters use different legal terms, such as: “forfeiture,” and “bond.” All of these terms are specific to the act of lending/borrowing carrying a specific legal meaning.
On the other hand, taking into consideration Goffman’s dramaturgical approach of social interactions, people have the ability to contour genuinely their reality, being unique actors of their own scene (shaped by the environment and the audience), and act independently. This dramaturgical approach makes us realize how the audience will judge our performance, when and how we act, and show how our real performance is behind the …show more content…
