To give an example when older children engage with friends the conversation will be relaxed with a high use of phatic communication. The use of a different vocabulary- slang words, made up words; different body language and behaviours can be noted. Whilst talking with others in a more formal situation would see the child using very different language. Halliday (as cited in week 2 OUA Language and Literacy for Teachers, 2016 p.17) discusses the role of Meta functions in the context of the function of language at different stages of development, here he refers to varying levels of formality known as “Register “.The register used will depend on whom the conversation is with and will dictate the responses and use of language. The Australian curriculum defines Standard Australian English as” The variety of spoken and written English language in Australia used in more formal settings such as for official or public purposes, and recorded in dictionaries, style guides and grammars. While it is always dynamic and evolving, it is recognised as the ‘common language’ of Australians.” ("Glossary entry for "Standard Australian English" - The Australian Curriculum v8.2", 2016).Later in a child’s life they may progress to acquiring Academic English. Academic English deals with the expression of ideas; explaining and describing of concepts or research.
