Language is full of mystery. With the vast variety of meaning that even one word can take on, people can have various ways of interrupting the same line of words. In this story, Montresor manipulated Fortunato by using his language wisely.
Montresor tells Fortunato that “[He has] received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and [he has his] doubts” (Poe117). Fortunato is immediately interested in his cask of Amontillado as he plans. It is obvious that Montresor is meticulous in his planning of Fortunato’s murder. He makes sure that no one is around to witness Montresor leading Fortunato to the catacombs. Fortunato does not suspect a thing since the carnival provides a very reasonable explanation for all the attendants to be absent at once. Then they continue to the vault. In the vault, Fortunato starts coughing intensely which makes him “impossible to reply for many minutes” (Poe 118). Montresor senses that Fortunato might decide to go back from here, since his coughing is so bad. Thus, to make sure that Fortunato continues with him, Montresor again flatters him and challenges his well-being, “we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. You will be ill, and I cannot be responsible. Besides, Luchesi...” (Poe 118). Montresor brings up Luchesi, as well as the possibility of going back many times throughout their journey into the catacombs. He says this at times that he feels that he needs to reassure Fortunato so he will continue with him. Montresor only says these words, which he does not mean, because he is sure that Fortunato will not give up the chance to prove his health status and taste in wine when someone challenges him.
