He talked about things relevant to his life in all his literature. While attending Lincoln his first book of poetry entitled “The Weary Blues” was published in 1926. The book appealed to the largely growing literate African American population and established both his poetic style and his commitment to black themes and heritage. The fact that Hughes wrote such an intense work expressing the constant and inescapable experience of an African American Artist in America reveals his own struggles with the matter. He was a mediator for the culture and the rest of the world. (Source 4) His literary work was followed by people of all races. His plays often brought people of all races together in one setting. His plays are not as popular as his novels and poem but they were as important. All of his work had a common message, it was freedom of expression. Hughes enjoyed being able to express himself with literature and fine arts. The Harlem Renaissance brought about uniqueness amongst African Americans, it was all new. The visual art, jazz, fashion and literature started a cultural change all over not just in Harlem. During the time Hughes seemed to outshine the others with his work.
