Langston Hughes characterizes Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones in many different ways throughout the story of "thanks you ma'am." First Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones was bossy by dragging Rogers all the way back to her house while having him in a head lock. She also made him wash himself up and scrub his dirty face. Another personality she has is caring and being kind to others. She shows this when Rogers try's to steal her purse and yet she still brings him back to her house and gives him food and some money to get the blue shoes he really wants.
