The boy was influenced by things around him like other people doing it and seeing other crimes. The woman walked home because of the story taking place in an urban setting this provided her work to be within walking distance of her house. The sentence “ The boy could hear other roomers laughing and talking in the large house.” (Hughes). By being in a city there are a lot of people so there are buildings like a large house where you could rent out homes or apartment buildings. The novel is about a vacant lot in Cleveland Ohio that becomes a garden to people from the part of the city it is located in. One way how the urban setting affects characters is stated on page 4 of Seedfolks where it mentions Kim planted beans in the vacant lot and that she vowed that would not let the beans die but grow successfully. Kim’s father was a farmer in Vietnam his whole life and died when she was 8 months old. Kim planted the beans to have a connection to her father since she never got to know him.
