Langston Hughes Analysis

The Langston Hughes performance we saw on Thursday was very unique. At first, I thought it was going to be boring, but after having a better understanding, I began to like it. Throughout the whole play, there was jazz music in the background which helped the play move along smoothly. On the side of the stage, were two men who played the instruments. One instrument, the saxophone, was played pretty often. Percussion instruments, such as the drums, were played as well. All these types of instruments blended in with the scenes of the play. I find it very amazing how one person can play so many instruments just for a single performance. Without the background music, I feel like there would be no feeling to this Langston Hughes play. For my paper I choose to read “Bop” by Langston Hughes and essay published in 1949 in the book “The Best American Essays of the Century.” Originally I choose this essay honestly because it was the shortest; later to find out it was actually very interesting to me. When I began reading this essay I kind of figured what it was going to be about and how it was going to end, but the author made it much more than what I expected. In this essay I would say the structure is ranked the highest of all categories, because of the fact he has so little words with so much meaning behind them. In Hughes’ essay he explains how Be-Bop came around and why it means so much to him.…

Change in Views Overtime Langston Hughes had a rather difficult life in post-war United States, as with the United States being a rather racist society, excluding and handicapping all races besides white. Hughes, being partially African American, White American, and Native American, Hughes experienced the worst of the worlds firsthand. He was under the stereotypes all the time, it be African American stereotypes, or Native American stereotypes. As a result of this racism he endured, Hughes poems was directed towards American society and towards the ruined dreams of people that were suppressed by the racism.…

Hughes grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, but he had lived in Illinois, Ohio, and Mexico! Hughes was crippled by Jim Crow Laws, as well as racists among all other things. Being culturally diverse and living somewhere such as New York, there were many different things that could have influenced Langston Hughes to write this piece of poetry. When the narrator speaks about the class, he doesn’t necessarily say he is the only colored person in the room, just the only African-American. The instructor is white, so the narrator is writing the paper to help the instructor understand him as a person, rather than a name and skin color.…

Hughes states, “The music/ from the trumpet at his lips/ is honey/ mixed with liquid fire/ the rhythm/ from the trumpet at his lips/ is ecstasy/ distilled from old desire” (stanza 3). Hughes explains the therapeutic relief of playing the trumpet in order to forget the pain from the past. He explains that the mixture of the sweet and hot music creates the opposite emotion than the man was feeling, which is happiness. Hughes continues as he states, “It’s hypodermic needle/ to his soul/ but softly/ as the tune comes from his throat/ trouble/ mellows to a golden note” (stanza 6). Hughes describes the way the music is relaxing as he explains the music being underneath him, in an literal sense, therefore soothing him.…

Poetry plays a role in politics that is often overlooked by the personalities patrolling today’s political battlefield. In prior eras, poetry took a more obvious and up-front role in politics. Poetry influenced some of the most powerful movements throughout American history— perhaps most clearly seen during the Civil Rights movement. Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes became a role model for Martin Luther King that grew from their similar background and heritage. King’s writing process for “I have a Dream,” looked to Hughes poetry for inspiration.…

Provocative, angry, and optimistic: all adjectives describing the work of Karl Marx and The Communist Manifesto. These adjectives could also describe a selection of poems written by Langston Hughes. The two texts spanning decades worth of literature and crossing over genres have subtle similarities that are brought to light when you look at the structure and writing style of both authors. Merely alluding to the economic problems that cause widows to work late shifts and parents to leave unemployed teenagers unsupervised, Langston Hughes focuses on the universal power of love and trust in "Thank You, M'am." Hughes portrays the nobility of common people and the vitality of his African American culture in his works. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, whose name ironically recognizes both slavery codes of the founders of the United States and the dignity of the common people, gives spiritual and physical gifts to the young boy. This large woman first recognizes the dignity of the boy's name, Roger.…

Salvation Salvation is “deliverance from the power and penalty of sin; redemption” (dictionary.com). Many Christians believe this to be true but the definition of salvation can be interpreted differently by others. The narrative story “Salvation” by Langston Hughes, talks about Hughes’ very own experience with Salvation. He was a little boy who believed he was ready to receive Jesus as his Savior, but little did he know he would leave church with doubts about God. The story also points out very discrete and different perspectives of what Salvation is.…
