In the book, “Franny and Zooey,” Lane Coutell starts us off with a setting of him at the train station whilst reading a letter. This scene shows us the basic personality traits that really allow the reader to see Lane’s true self. The factitious character traits that Lane carries are spotted here also. This is a quote that easily lets the reader see that he seems to be a very egotistical in the sense that even though he may feel a certain way about seeing Franny, he chooses not to show it for his own self interest, “He tried to empty his face of all expression that might quite simply, perhaps even beautifully, reveal how he felt about the arriving person”(7). That is one of the few reasons that Lane isn’t the person for Franny. Especially due
