Good morning Ms Gianotti and fellow classmates. For this term’s child studies assessment, I have designed a toy for 2-3-year-old called the “Art Geo Board”. The art geo board is a kids toy to encourage them to learn more about shapes, colours, numbers, alphabet, objects, pattern, counting and symmetry. It is a wooden board with pegs you can string rubber bands around and fairly simple to make and cheap fun. I made this toy for under $12 in materials and completed in less than an hour.…

A Place of the Heart Gardens are known for bringing beauty and color into people’s life and on many occasions they hold secrets to the creator's life. In the novel Samurai’s Garden, by Gail Tsukiyama, the author metaphorically compares the two very different gardens of Matsu and Sachi to show how they overcome their life challenges and how they both use their gardens as a place of therapy.…

In the trove of memories that I have from the visits to Florida, one in particular stands out. One day when we visited in June we went to Blue Springs park. It had crystal clear water so you were able to see 40ft to the bottom. After swimming in spring water for a while we rented canoes and went down the river it was connected to. We had enough fun after a couple hours and we were about to finish the day off by jumping off a 5ft ledge into the 40ft deep water.…

Triple digit summers, Joshua trees in every direction, a tourist hot spot for those who are seeking clarity, the utter boredom of every day, this is not your average desert--welcome to Yucca Valley. Generally, the scenery is labeled as bland, empty, incomplete; to the untrained eye it really is all of this; vast mountains of emptiness, one single highway littered with ‘mom-and-pop’ shops; simplicity can be beautiful though. The town is full of wonder, hidden wildlife in the distance, cacti and native shrubberies in full bloom, and when the sun sets the stars come out to play—nothing can equate to the beauty of seeing the clusters of far off nebula. The desert can be a stunning place—unless of course you go to the Yucca Valley Park, home of…

Ecological design is a major part of our coming future and is necessary for the prosperity of our species as caretakers for the world. Sim Van Der Ryn and Stuart Cowan, in their book Ecological Design, address five principles in design that will help to move society in the right direction. It has been over the course of the last century that building designers and engineers have neglected the entirety of environmental impacts that went into their buildings. They have built, I believe, from a strictly human perspective with regard only to what the majority wants.…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
