Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus

At the center of the painting, a farmer plows his field by the aid of his ox as his neighbor shepherds his flock along the hillside. In the distant ocean, ships are setting sail with as much hopes to profit, as there is cargo. But what- no, who- is that? From the bottom right of the painting, are those someone’s legs helplessly flailing upward out of the water? Could that insignificant blot be Icarus himself? Just as everyone else in the painting goes on with their lives, I too should not have the slightest sympathy for his poor soul. His Father warned him not to fly to close to the sun. His fall was by his own folly, yet I struggle to escape such allegations myself. When observing Pieter Bruegel’s painting, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, I cannot help but look back upon a time at which I myself failed. …show more content…
Growing up as a child, I not only had trouble focusing in the classroom, but I found school to be devastatingly boring. I quickly became enamored by TV and video games, but sending me to school was like a punishment. My parents and teachers all told me of how I would regret not trying in school, yet I would not listen. Each year I faced the dreadful uncertainty of whether or not I would make it to the next grade. Each year I ignored the loving advice of my teachers to try harder. By the time I reached ninth grade, I was as blind as Oedipus, unable to see the damage I had actually done. Like Icarus, I had fallen into the sea, but much worse, because I thought I was fine! I was the foolish man building his house upon sand; I had little to no foundation in my education. All that was left was for me to

Beautiful things come and go throughout our lives, and one may never understand what they truly are by simply observing them for what they seem to be in accordance with their appearance. At least, such ideals are what I have learned, as I have witnessed those who are beautiful, naïve, and misguided ruining their lives along with the lives of others. As I have thoughts such as these while observing Peiter Bruegel’s Landscape with the Fall of Icarus (Bruegel), I can only recall with my mind’s eye Catherine and Heathcliff, how foolish they were, the young and impressionable tormented souls of our secluded segment of the world—Wuthering Heights. So similar to the ambitus and naïve Icarus, who merely attempted to gain what he desired through misguided…

People spend most of their life in school, and by the time kids are in high school, they learn that school is not for them. Many kids fail to complete their credentials in high school and drop out before they graduate. The dropout rate in the U.S is increasing very often and people often try to understand just exactly why kids are dropping out. One of the main factors for kids dropping out is motivation. The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

While I was in middle school my grades were utterly appalling; however, I had found the trick to getting my desirably high grade point average; that trick was to read. Before I found the trick of reading I wouldn’t try very hard on my assignments because I did not know what I was doing. I would procrastinate and get astonishing low grades; until, I grew up and took some time out of my day to study. Now I find myself reading constantly about topics ranging from animals to the question of if the American dream is still achievable in today’s society. My grades have also noticed an improvement; such as, my grade point average has been improved from below a two to above a three point five.…

After reading “Musee des Beaux Arts” poem and viewing the “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” painting, it is evident that there’s a common theme demonstrated and developed between these two sources, which is that suffering and death can be overlooked and affect people in various ways. The author creates and develops this common theme by creating a tone in each selection and by placing common ideas and topics in both pieces that aid in creating the common theme. Some of the common ideas and topics presented in each selection are that the act of suffering and death is not the main topic, and that in both selections, beautiful things are taking place to distract the viewer/reader from the tragedy occurring. To begin, after reading the poem “Musee des Beaux Arts” by W.H. Auden, it is evident that the author developed and demonstrated the theme that suffering and Death can be overlooked and affect people in various ways.…

Notebooks are just pieces of paper with words scrawled all over them, right? Wrong, journals are the physical manifestation of one’s soul. My notebook is a cultural artifact I share with very many people around the world for a common goal: to express and understand myself. People have used a physical medium to express themselves since 40,000 years ago using cave walls to paint (Waldman 1). It’s a no-brainer that people continue to do so today.…
