Reflection On Summarization In English Class

During this semester, English 101 elaborated on multiple skills that may have not been touched on in high school or other colleges. Coming from high school, in my four years of English classes, I never had to write or discuss summarizing articles, papers, and other writings. After learning a few tips and tricks on how to summarize a piece of text, it became easier to summarize the texts and also improved my ability to tell others summaries of data or information. After the few assignments we had on summarizing, I feel like we should have had one more assignment or more available time to talk about it in class because it seems like an important skill to have in jobs and when displaying information to others. Looking back on the summary assignments now, it wasn’t an issue for me to …show more content…
This skill has helped me in my engineering 100 class and chemistry because for our labs we needed to create reports. In most reports you need to sum up what you did, the data you found, and anything you discovered.
In our first assignment of summarizing “The End of Sustainability” by Melinda Benson and Robin Craig, my initial paper was disappointing in a way to myself because of how little I knew about summarization. Starting with my concluding paragraph, “The author’s main proposal is that the use of sustainability needs to be revamped and modified to deal with today’s issues rather than allow it to continue to represent old values and ways of thinking. Sustainability today is described by the authors as a useless idea and that if it is not changed to accommodate today’s sciences and needs in industry, the environment may reach its tipping point of equilibrium and may not be recoverable” (Summary Assignment 1).     I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already.
