Landon Carter, the son of a wealthy family and self-centered teenager, wins the election of student body president. One of his duties is to attend the Homecoming dance, but he doesn’t want to go alone, so he asks Jamie Sullivan to be his date. Jamie, a girl he’s known since the 2nd grade, but never became friends with because she was never on his “social calendar” (pg. 17). That was the start of an unknowingly romance that soon develops into something strangely new for both of them. What makes this novel so interesting is the fact that it’s being told by Landon’s perspective. Sparks portrays Landon through first-person to help the reader easily visualize all of the past events they he went through. The uniqueness of both main characters and …show more content…
He addresses the reader at the end of the prologue with “First you will smile, and then you will cry—don’t say you haven’t been warned” (Prologue xiii). This love story begins in 1958, and Landon tells the reader how one person changed his whole life, from being a self-centered kid who makes fun of unique people to a selfless and loving man. He’d attend church every Sunday just like everyone else in the small town, was polite to his parents, and never showed arrogance towards people for being one of the wealthiest families in Beaufort. He was living a satisfied life with wealth, family and popularity. That was until he met Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of a preacher who was surrounded in her own bubble. Jamie is a very complex character who eludes the stereotypes of a preacher girl. A girl described as “plain” (Pg. 19) because she only believed in inner beauty. Landon starts realizing that he is changing into a better person with Jamie’s perspective of life. Before, he never cared for anyone else besides himself, but with the way he felt about her, he wanted to grow as a person. For example, both attended an event to collect bottles and raising money to buy presents for the orphanage. It was unsuccessful, so Landon donated a big portion of his family’s money to the fund without telling anyone, but it was worth it because Jamie said it was a miracle. Sparks built these two characters love for each other in a slow pace but was worthwhile, because so many things occurred that helped lead up to this romance. Landon was ready to take the next step, but something was holding Jamie back and she finally told him why she was scared to go forward. Jamie tells Landon that he cannot be in love with her but he refuses to do so, she blurts out “I’m dying, Landon” (pg. 163) hoping it would change his mind, but it doesn’t. He couldn’t understand why his sweet Jamie would be punished last summer by God with a deadly illness—Leukemia. Although he was upset and hurt, he knew that it was best to put his feelings aside and be closer to Jamie now more than ever. “Doing the play was the thing that kept me healthy for so long” (pg. 168) explained Jamie, as she tried to assure Landon that without him she wouldn’t be alive. What got Jamie to keep fighting for her life, was to

As the novel opens, Jimmie, a young boy, is leading a street fight against a troop of youngsters from another part of New York City's impoverished Bowery neighborhood. Jimmie is rescued by Pete, a teenager who seems to be a casual acquaintance of his. They encounter Jimmie's offhandedly brutal father, who brings Jimmie home, where we are introduced to his timid older sister Maggie and little brother Tommie, and to Mary, the family's drunken, vicious matriarch. The evening that follows seems typical: the father goes to bars to drink himself into oblivion while the mother stays home and rages until she, too, drops off into a drunken stupor. The children huddle in a corner, terrified.…

The book that I read in 2nd quarter was “Everything Everything” by Nicola Yoon. The genre of the book is fiction and takes place from 2013-2014 in Los Angeles, California. This story is being told by Madeline Whittier in first person point of view. I think the theme of the book is never hold back, go for it, don’t be cautious, and find yourself. This is the theme because once Madeline met Olly and didn’t let her “illness” hold her back she opened herself into a new world that eventually changed her for the better.…
