If I have not challenged myself to practice and to confront challenges, I could not have become the principal player in our school’s jazz band and wind ensemble. After several breakthroughs, I decided to share my inspirations to the younger generation. This year, I am one of the coordinators of the Molding Musicians program supported by the Cypress Boys and Girls Club, teaching the fifth and sixth graders how to play an instrument. I appreciate the fact that my achievements did not come from an easy work, but rather a persistent standing against…

In this course, students would pair with some depressed kids and help them reconstruct confidence through leading them to success . The unit I will be designing for my middle school general music class focuses on creating an original composition of music. The students will be working in peer groups to write original lyrics (two verses and one chorus), create a rhythmic “loop” using the application GarageBand on their laptops, and create a music video using their final original song. This unit will relate to many of the National Music Standards, and the students will have choice and will incorporate the use of technology, group work, and performance. For this unit, the assessment format I feel will be most practical to utilize is the “performance-based format” listed by author Larry Ainsworth in Rigorous Curriculum Design (2010, p. 138).…

Last year I led a “Change the World” project in my English class. My grandmother had recently died of Alzheimer’s, so I wanted to learn more about the disease and how I could help. I assembled a small team of girls who cared and knew someone who had been affected by Alzheimer’s. We read about research being done and remedies being developed, and discovered a small, non-profit, called Music and Memory. The movie Alive Inside showed how they use music to touch and “awaken” seniors suffering from dementia.…

In general, this project has taught me key 21st century skills such as creativity, collaboration, communication, organization and working in a group. The uniqueness of this project was a great learning experience because I 've never done this type of project in any of my other classes. I am very proud of the finished product and all the hard work and time I put into it. If I could do one thing differently, it would be to leave more time in class towards the end of the project to be able to practice as a group what each of us were going to say when it came time to present to the architects and realtors. On block day before the presentation, we only ran through what we were going to say once and I wish we would have left more time to practice.…
