Ever since before the birth of the nation, equality has been stepped upon, used incorrectly, shunned, and ignored completely. The attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001 opened up a whole new door of inequality. There are two main types of inequality facing us today: racial and economic. Racism has become an even bigger issue, especially towards people of Indian descent. Racial profiling is now prominent in airports. Officials have “random” checks which usually aren’t random at all. The searches usually happened to people who are or may just seem Middle Eastern. This is because the people who hijacked the planes and performed the terrorist acts of 9/11 were Muslim extremists from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates. Middle Easterners are treated differently in America ever since 9/11, especially when wearing a turban or hijab or some sort of head covering associated with the Middle East. The other type of inequality facing America is the economic gap between the rich and the poor. Following the attacks, the U.S. economy slowed. Although the Great Recession ended in 2009, the economy was still weak. The American people blamed corrupt and greedy businessmen working on Wall Street. This led to the Occupy Wall Street protest in which people gathered to demonstrate their grievances.
