Bullying is a serious and complicated problem that happens within a specific social construct that is influenced by certain types of media, like fairy tales such as Sleeping Beauty. Such social constructs can involve concepts such as gender norms. According to Yerby, Baron, and Lee, “Gender roles are a perceived set of behavioral norms usually associated with males and females in a given social group or system” (1). In addition to there being a couple of different reasons why people bully, there are also different types of bullying. Furthermore, for any behavior to be bullying it must have specific characteristics. However, the consequences of any type of bullying are severe for everyone involved. Bullying is oftentimes handled inappropriately by school officials, and there are misconceptions about bullying.

“Three necessary elements of bullying are that the behavior (a) involves the intent to cause fear or harm, (b) is repetitious, and (c) is perpetuated by a person who holds some form of power over the person at whom the behavior is directed” (1-2). Hughes, Schuele, and Kelly also state that situations need to be analyzed carefully before school officials decide whether or not it involves bullying. A person needs to post a humiliating video or picture of someone once, since several people have access to that video and/or picture and it can be viewed multiple times. Power imbalance does not need to be based on physical characteristics, or even accurate ones. As a matter of fact, “... a power differential can be created based on any difference that tends to tip the balance of favor toward one student or a group of students”
