1.1 Literature Review
“Land cover refers to the physical and biological cover over the surface of land, including water, vegetation, bare soil, and/or artificial structures” (Ellis, 2013). While, land cover change often means the modifications of Earth’s surface by human activities. Although, human have modified land for thousands of years for food, constructions or other things, the current rates, extents and intensities of land cover change are far greater than ever in history (Ellis, 2013). These changes always cause biodiversity loss, climate change, water, soil, air pollution and other impacts. It is also the third longest navigable river in the world, after the Amazon and Nile (Discover Murray River, 2015) and spans three states: Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia (Discover Murray River, 2015). Murray River is a significant barrier for land-based traveling and trading (OMICS International, 2014). In 1914, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia agreed to share the waters of the Murray after many years of negotiations, then the River Murray Commission was founded in 1917 and composed by the representatives of the three states and federal government to reasonable use and development the river (Murray Darling Basin Authority, 2015). After that, many ports along Murray River has developed quickly as places to cross the river by bridge or ferry. The first bridge to cross the Murray was built in 1897 in the town of Murray Bridge (State Library of South Australia, 2015). Murray Bridge is located in South Australia, and 76 kilometers away from the capital city, Adelaide (Trip Suggest, 2014). It is a popular scenic that attracting more than 1.1 million visitors every year for business and holidays.
