The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

The painter Parmigianino, in his art piece, Madonna with the long neck, captures a fused narrative that comes from another art piece, “Vision of Saint Jerome”. The Russian Bride’s Attire is a life-sized oil painting by the Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky that is currently hanging in the Legion of Honor. At 110 x 147 inches, the piece pulls you in; as if you could step right into it and begin helping the ladies prepare the bride for marriage, or maybe bust her out of there. Makovsky is telling a subtle story through the composition and subject of this painting. The amount of emotion he brings with his angles and use of light and color is breath taking. He’s telling the story of a young girl who is set to be married off to the king, although this may sound glamourous, the girl looks unhappy, and no wonder; she’s a teenager preparing for marriage, preparing to leave behind her family and everything…

Art is, and has always been, a reflection of society and time. Its styles alter and develop from era to era based on changes in sociological, religious, and political climates, just to name a few. A prime example of art’s fluxing nature is the image of Henry VIII, which changes greatly after he institutes the Reformation in England. In his early years as the King of England, and for many years prior, portraits of the monarchy in England were done in medieval style. Figures were flat, bodiless, two-dimensional, and quite unintimidating.…

Edward VI and Mary I’s brief reigns combined with their lack of understanding on the impact of powerful visual imagery created a void in distinctive royal portraiture beginning from the time of their father’s passing. Henry VIII was portrayed as a fearless Warrior King and to much of the public was seen as such. This level of engrained iconography would not be present again until the reign of Henry VIII’s second wife’s daughter, Elizabeth I. When Queen Elizabeth I ascended the throne, she was succeeding an unsuccessful regime led by her half-sister Mary I. Flattery was a key purpose of royal portraiture at the time and considering how Mary I was thought of as a failure, the two sisters were not compatible, and that Elizabeth represented contrast,…

The artist describes her work with, “The look pulls people in, but as you look closer you can see the image deteriorate, and if you are more privy to Native history you can see it right away” (qtd in Brien). As one examines The Last Thanks, it is evident that Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting, The Last Supper, sparked Wendy Red Star’s inspiration for this photograph. It is obvious in the title itself that The Last Thanks is influenced by The Last Supper. Red Star is even positioned similarly as Da Vinci’s portrayal of Jesus Christ. With the obvious comparisons to Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous piece, Red Star’s artwork “successfully forces the viewer to critique colonialism and religion with every examination of the image” (Tesema).…

Throughout Queen Elizabeth I’s rule, several artists painted portraits of her majesty. These paintings use symbolism to highlight several memorable facts and character traits about the queen. The Rainbow Portrait, which was created by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger between 1600 and 1602, is perhaps one of the most famous symbolic portraits of Elizabeth. Painted towards the last years of the queen’s rule, this portrait serves to symbolize her eternal youth.…
