Though Wachowski's family supported her through every step of her transition, Wachowski felt quite alone when she was a young "Larry", not understanding her gender identity and feeling like a "freak" for it. Struggling with that loneliness drove young Larry to almost attempt suicide, but motivated adult Lana to become an identifiable icon for transgendered youths feeling as lonely as she had.
