Lana Del Rey Video Analysis

Lana Del Rey is known to have both a powerful and calming tone when she sings. In the “Born to Die” video, however, her soothing voice is filled with sadness and heartbreak as she and her boyfriend have their share of misery. Throughout the video, Del Rey shows a saddened tone, repetitive imagery and lighting, either being light or dark. Dark imagery and lighting suggest that her and her boyfriend are in a unstable relationship, while white imagery and lighting suggest that she is finally at peace, with him being out of the picture. From the tone, Del Rey makes it apparent that she knows that they are not going to last very long and tries to live her life to the fullest, unfortunately still miserable in the end. Using the same scene as the American flag, the scene here is in some parts light and some parts dark, because she is with him it is dark lighting and the American flag represents freedom from the relationship, making it lighter. For example, in the car scene, the lighting is darker where they are kissing, and the guy is almost forcing her to do the things she is doing to him and that she obviously does not want to do anything like that with him. Another example, in the second to last scene, the lighting is still dark and as they are driving, you begin to see a red light flashing, which means that they are approaching something hazardous. He is hold Del Rey meaning that the crash only affected her, as he wanted both of them to die from the crash, and the fire behind him indicates that he will live in his own hell from what he did, now that she is gone.
