Tragedy struck on November 28, as LAMIA Flight 2933 crashed just five miles away from its destination in Medellin, Colombia. Six people involved in the accident survived, unfortunately, the remaining 71 had died. Among the passengers were members of the Brazilian Chapecoense soccer squad, who were on their way to play in the Copa Sudamericana cup finals. The soccer club was having the best season it has had since its establishment in 1973 and it would have been the team's first appearance in the finals. Out of respect for the victims of the accident, the Chapecoense soccer club was crowned the winner of the Copa Sudamericana tournament. Since the accident, teams from all over in South America have offered to loan players to the club for free.
