Comical Side Of Laughter

Improved Essays
Laughter is incredibly powerful. Eugene P. Bertin once said "There is a purifying power in laughter. It is truth in palatable form. It is instant vacation. Seeing the comical side of many situations makes life a great deal easier. It 's like riding through life on sensitive springs that ease every jolt.". There is so much truth in this quote and it can easily be broken into three main points. Those points would have to be laugher is a purifying power, laughter makes even the toughest situations easier to deal with, and laughter is truth in a form that is easier to deal with. It could be broken down further but I think these three points are the most important ones to discuss.
Laughter can be used to make something as ugly as politics

For example, African Americans used comedy to heal the wounds that were made with slavery. Instead always being bitter a few people started making jokes about their masters and themselves in order to try and mend a few bonds and change the situation for the better. This allowed new friendships to be created and pulled people out of oppression. As Bertin said “Seeing the comical side of many situations makes life a great deal easier.” If everyone could just laugh a little more the world would be a happier, lighter, and less uptight place to live. Laughter has the power to relieve tension from some of the most stressful situations. It just makes people relax and once the situation has relaxed it can be resolved in a much more level-headed manner. Now if only we could get Kim Jong-un to laugh with us a bit more maybe he wouldn’t be so hell bent on blowing us up. Also if the middle-east could take a joke or two maybe we wouldn’t have so many deaths every …show more content…
What I think Bertin means by this is telling someone the truth about a grim situation or one that is filled with tension is much easier if you do it in a light almost joking manner. For example, imagine you just ate the last of the Oreos which is your mom’s favorite cookie. She hides them from everyone because she is on a diet and she doesn’t want anyone to find out that she has been cheating on her diet. So not only have you found her hidden stash of legal crack but you eat them all which isn’t that preposterous because Oreos are literally drugs in cookie form. But like I was saying your mom is about to come around the corner and catch you covered in Oreo crumbs. Now you have a few options tell your mom that she’s fat and you stole all of her cookies, run away join the circus and grow a mullet, or tell her that you just helped her destroy the evidence and you will never tell as long as she does not punish you for helping her stay on track. Although the second option seems very tempting (I mean come on, who doesn’t want a mullet?), I would personally go with the third option, due to the use of humor which makes the truth a little bit more

This sketch was one of the many moments Saturday Night Live as particularly feminist. Fey and Poehler, along with writer and performer Seth Meyers pointed out the fact that the way American politics was sexist; they were not going to remain quiet about, instead they pointed it out through a parody and got people thinking about the qualifications of the candidates rather than their sex. Another humorous feminist moment during the 2008 election was when Fey guest starred during a Weekend Update segment and called out people for calling Hillary Clinton “a bitch,” and, “along with heavily pregnant feminist bestie Poehler, turned her rant into a legendary tirade. She said yeah, Clinton was a bitch, and so was she, and so was Poehler, because “bitches get shit done”, turning an insult into a rallying cry” (Henderson). Fey and Poehler do so much for feminism, they do it with humor and sass but they get people thinking about women’s rights and get others to reassess how they view women.…

Humor at the Expense of Blonde White Women Throughout the history of mankind, human beings have expressed humor in the form of laughter; a sense of humor as we perceive it today is a relatively recent construct of modern day social scientists and psychologists (Holland, 1982).However, our sense of humor, as well as our conception of the same is not static but changes with the changing consciousness of the society. As societies become more complex, our understanding of the concept of or sense of humor similarly becomes more complex. In recent times, comedy has proven itself to be an extremely popular film genre whose appeal and acceptance spans across nationalities, races and generations throughout the world. Traditionally, comedy involving beautiful blonde white women has sourced its humor from people’s perceived naivety and superficiality of beautiful blonde women.…

There has been evidence regarding the humor in children. A brain imaging technology shows that humor activates known reward or pleasure centers in the brain (Mobbs, 2003.) Laughter for a young child starts at three months if not before, at this stage the child is beginning to get familiar with ‘play cues’ which is being triggered in the brain to laugh because whatever the child may be laughing at is familiar to them. It could be something that the parent does on regular basics that the child is familiar with that make them laugh or smile. As late as six months, infants laugh similarly at both normal and unusual behaviors when parents laugh too (McGhee, 2003).…

Does comedy help promote social change? Ramon Lopez, Iain Ellis and the documentary Tickling Giants demonstrate how comedy has had some social change but has not had a positive impact on society nor promoted great social change. Ellis discusses about how The Talk Show brought about a change in society but not a positive change in which the comedian expected since the nation returned to where they started or even worse. While Lopez discuss how the comedian Jon Stewart does not promote positive social change but rather degrading change in society. I agree that comedy can have a social effect but disagree that comedians can bring about a positive change.…
