No wonder "La La Land" received 14 Oscar Nominations. This opening sequence is packed with literally everything that would typically make members of the academy giddy: A long, sweeping and uninterrupted tracking shot full of young attractive people who celebrate the very fabric and values Hollywood is built upon; a scene which impeccably conforms to Tom Gunnings’ idea of a cinema of attractions, a cinema that "displays its visibility, willing to rupture a self-enclosed fictional world for a chance to solicit the attention of the spectator"; a scene that sets the tone for an entire film utterly besotted with nostalgia for the golden days of good old tinseltown, and above all Hollywood itself.
