Being out on the lake was both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. It was like being at the top of a rollercoaster waiting for the first drop, the heart-squeezing plummet to certain death that was never quite fulfilled. I never said no to a day on the water.
“Race you to the buoys?” My best friend is one of those girls you love one second and want to choke the next. Every day on the lake starts like this.
“See ya!” I yell over my shoulder. Before she’s had a chance to say one trash-talking word back to me, I’m gone with a rush of energy and the power of a gas-driven engine. I leave her in my wake, a wave of white water foaming behind me in two tails that flow to either side. My heart pounds wildly, beating a rhythm against me from the inside, a drum roll that drives me on faster.

She smiles and waves at me as she glides effortlessly on her jet-ski, walking on water with power and grace. I smile back, but it only reaches my lips, a sneer if I really think about it. We have examined many wonderful stories throughout the course of this year, but my favorite from this year was Once More to the Lake by E.B. White. Magnificently, it encompasses the story of a father sharing one of his greatest childhood memories with his son. As a boy, the father had ventured with his family to the state of Maine, where they spent the month of August living next to a lake. Although there were a couple incidents on his original trip, the father had always been drawn to the peacefulness of the lake and the fantastic memories which were linked to the place. However, the story focused more exclusively on the realization of the father, where he pictured himself as his father and his son as him.…

8534 Affairs at Sea During the summer of 1914, one of my contacts informed me that Mrs. Pankhurst’s arrest was scheduled to happen this afternoon, therefore I was quick to respond. Reaching out to my friend Eliza, I started preparations for setting out by sea. Eliza was a strong, determined woman, and an activist for women’s suffrage, like myself. Unfortunately, she lacked in boatmanship skills, so I had to direct her how to manage and set up the boat.…

White Water Rafting When we went white water rafting in Colorado with our family friends it was a lot of emotions. First, we got on an old, bumpy school bus. Driving down a narrow winding road, in a canyon with mountains on both sides of us. The view was amazing with every single color you could think of on one picture! When we got on the raft I quickly noticed how cold the water was.…

I returned to my location on the Lakeshore Nature Preserve Path, just past the Center of Limnology going toward the lakeshore side of campus, on April 6, 2018 from 10:45-11:15 am. It was chilly and very windy that day. It had snowed earlier in the week, so there was still some white visible on the land surrounding the lake. The land straight across the lake looks like a town or city. On both sides of the town, there are many trees lining the shore.…

The shock of the frigid water takes my breath away and I am momentarily stunned; however, my body quickly adjusts to the nippy water. The still of the water is broken by the half-a-hundred ripples, circling on and on, spreading from the center, in my brother’s attempt to skip a stone on the water. “Whoa,” my little brother says in astonishment, in awe of the gust of wind that blows the small ripples in the water into the swells of the sea, which would soon be chuckling and surging with laughter as they toss little boats across the surface of the ocean. As I turn to admire Andrew’s satisfaction with the beauty of nature, I find that he has built his own sand castle, in which the grains of sand glisten in the sun like a diamond ring. As I take a deep breath in, the scent, which has a slight pinch of sulfur, and a briny finish fills my nose.…

Everything about the lake we knew, had been based off of photos, none of which were even close to how beautiful it was. As soon as we stepped out of the car, it had sunk in that there was no possible way we could see everything. The first view that stood out was the lake itself. The sunlight shone perfectly on the tides, creating an almost blinding reflection in its wake. The moving water had also fabricated the same image on the red-orange cliff sides.…

Some people look at a lake and think of how many scary fish and lake weeds there are. When I look at a lake I think of how fun it would be to sink the tube or even stop at the deepest spot of the lake and jump off the boat. There are many activities that people do on the lake like swimming, stopping at the sandbar, tubing, skiing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding and many more. Being on the lake is not only just an entertaining thing to do on the weekends but it’s also a hobby that I really believe in.…
