Throughout my elementary school years, from grades kindergarten to 5th grade, I attended a small private school in the town that I lived. My school was, Lake Area Christian and though there are some aspects of my time at this school that I regret, there are many things that I am grateful for. Attending such a small school during my earlier years really helped me begin to acclimate with other children on a smaller scale and learn to navigate looking different than other children. The smaller school setting also provided for more teacher on student time and many hands-on activities and field-trips. Additionally, class sizes were very small; during my kindergarten year, there was 20 students and by my final year of 5th grade there was only 9. My classmates truly became my friends and because there was so few of us we grew close to one another.
While attending Lake Area, I remember many different activities that I could participate in. Some of those activities ranged from different fieldtrips like going to Sauder’s Village, Zoos, science museums, the state capital, and more. Every year the school

One of these events included the annual all-day of reading. During the all-day of reading event students could come to school in their pajamas. I remember being at home on the mornings of this event and very carefully going through every pair of pajamas I had to find the perfect ones that I wanted to wear to school that day; often taking way too much time to my mother’s dismay. One these days we could also come to school with pillows, blankets, and snacks. You never wanted to take too many snacks though because the teachers always provided their class with all kinds of goodies as well. Most of the time the teachers would make something home aid and the wonderful scents could be smelt as soon as you entered the building at the beginning of the

There are various reasons as to why I’m deserving of the Etna-Dixmont School Scholarship. The most prevalent reason is my family history and connection with the town of Dixmont. My father and my grandparents moved to from Massachusetts to Dixmont, Maine when he was in second grade. My grandfather bought a house on Route 9 in Dixmont, and some other land in addition to that. The Dixmont Corner Church was built in 1835, and had an active one room school house next to it that was built in 1808.…

I’m sure someone has asked them self what it would be like to go to a whole new school at one point in their life, especially if they did not like their school much. I certainly had, but I most definitely not expecting to. Going from a private school like Jackson Academy to a small public school like Puckett High School was a big change, and there were many contrasts between the two schools. Detaching myself from the world around me to look in as a third party exposed the culture I have been raised into. To complete this assignments I went to Mirror Lake on campus to observe and document the social behaviors I witnessed. I recorded over a two day span. I first sat by the northern side of the lake on the stone fence, to be aloof from what was transpiring in front of me. The second day I sat on the western side on the grass under the trees to get right in the middle of what was happening.…

I demonstrated leadership at the waterfront festival by presenting the importance and safety of keeping water clean. I expressed this by keeping the students focused, letting them engage in hands on experiments, and answering all their questions to help them get a better understanding of what was happening. These leadership skills helped me earn respect from each student. One of the ways I demonstrated leadership while presenting to the students was making sure they were focused on my presentation.…

I went to elementary and middle school in Monroe City, before transferring to South Shelby my freshman year. That was the best decision I’ve made so far in my life. At first, I was worried. I didn’t think that any high school could be so friendly that they didn’t actually need locks on the lockers. But, after my mom talked to the cheerleading coach at the time, I realized that maybe this school is somewhat nice.…

Students who are used to smaller schools can have difficulties when faced with a larger environment; furthermore, this can affect the student’s academic achievements. In a recent study performed by Ed Young found that “large districts produce certain diseconomies including ‘impersonal atmosphere; lower participation rates in school events; less positive attitudes toward school; less attention to individual students; less parental involvement;…and higher dropout rates’” (qtd.in Betty and Becky). The combining of school created an atmosphere where the student felt like there was not a connection with the teachers; therefore, made their attitudes toward school negative. Since loss of attention and negative attitudes toward school developed, this caused a higher dropout rate.…
