Laissez-Faire Style Of Leadership

The laissez-faire style of leadership can be effective when leading a staff of motivated, highly skilled, self-directed employees who have years of experience. Working as a clinical research nurse, this style works well. In this role, you are trained specifically on the current protocol and it is up to you to enroll the patient and maintain logs to keep the study going. It is a very independent role of nursing. In this role the manager, who is more of a mentor, oversees if the nurse has questions, but otherwise lets her do what she need to do. Providing mentoring and recognizing employees who need it are basic skills all leaders should have (Wells & Wells 2010). To be in this type of role, you must be a very motivated employee. A novice nurse would not do well in this role due to the lack of an immediate resource. It is a challenge to provide immediate feedback with this type of nursing, you must be sure to have a good relationship with effective communication with your employee the feedback. Using laissez-faire would well in a small group of nurses versus a large unit.
