Mayor Strange, commissioners of the City of Montgomery, Chief Finley, command staff of the Montgomery Police Department, families, guest, and most importantly, members of Montgomery Police Academy Recruit Graduating Class 2017. Good Morning. It is an honor and a privilege to stand before you today. First and foremost, I want to say congratulation and thank each one you for taking a stand to serve your community. In law enforcement, there are three types of leadership styles: autocratic, consultative, democratic, participative, and Laissez-Faire. Each one of the leadership styles has different tasks. For example, Laissez-Faire leadership styles are for employees who know what they are supposed to do. In leadership, they also have errors such as preoccupation, indecisiveness, defending decisions made without full information, and ignoring danger signs (Hess, Orthmann, and Ladue, 2016). To the graduating class understands this, it is not about doing things right, but doing the right thing. When it is your moment, you will have the opportunity to take the lead on an investigation or run patrol, so never be in the rush to take on the leadership role, because you all are leaders in your own special way (Basic Police Academy Graduation Remarks, 2017). When I look out in the crowd, I see potential Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captains, Chiefs, Commissioners, Directors, and Wardens. To my future officers, I want you to understand that leadership is not about rank in law enforcement. But it is important that leadership qualities are instilled in you as a law enforcement officers (Hess, Orthmann, and Ladue, 2016).
