Lady Macbeth has bad intentions. She plots to deceive her guests that come to her house for dinner. She puts on a facade to disguise her evil innerself. To ensure her husband becomes king, she decided to murder Duncan. However, in the company of others she plays the part of a good host. She encourages her husband to do the same when she tells him “…my lord, sleek o’er your rugged looks…” (Act III Scene ii Line 27). Only the evil have a guilty conscious. Towards the end of the play, Lady Macbeth is haunted by her crimes. She realized her evil and cannot escape it. Lady Macbeth said “My hands are of your color, but I shame To wear a heart so white” (Act II Scene ii Line 79). Lady Macbeth had innocent blood on her hands. Because of her guilty conscious, her life becomes a downward spiral. Lady Macbeth suffered from restless nights and sleep walks. She is afraid of the dark and constantly needs light, indicating she had something to hide. The doctor noticed this when he said “ she has light by her continually; ‘tis her command.” (Act V Scene i Line 26). Lady Macbeth’s psyche is becoming unhinged; she is gradually losing touch with reality. Her dark soul poisons her mind and she could not take it anymore. “ Tis safer to be that which we destroy than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy" (Act III Scene ii Line 6).
