Lady Macbeth is another secondary character who plays a key role in advancing the plot by motivating Macbeth to kill Duncan, deceiving Duncan into a stealthy murder and revealing one of the play’s principle themes of guilt. Lady Macbeth is the driving force behind Macbeth’s motivation to kill Duncan as she manipulates Macbeth by mocking his manliness, and consequently motivates Macbeth to carry out the murder. Upon Macbeth confessing to Lady Macbeth that he will “proceed no further in this business” (1.7.32), that is, the plan to murder Duncan, Lady Macbeth initiates her manipulation to change Macbeth’s mind. In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, characters such as the three supernatural witches, Hecate, and Lady Macbeth use psychological manipulation, the act of exploiting or controlling someone by using deception and abusive tactics. They control and persuade the protagonist Macbeth to eventually commit atrocities that destroy not only himself, but the lives of many people he once trusted. Macbeth, though once humble and loyal to his king and country, loses his initial heroistic traits that he possesses at the beginning of the play to the very idea of becoming king himself. Therefore, the tactics of psychological and emotional manipulation that these characters use are entirely effective.…

When it comes to evaluating the world, people often glance over the truth in order to see what they want to see.…

She speaks a soliloquy before the king and his men arrive at Lady Macbeth and Macbeth's shared castle for a party. Lady Macbeth made up her mind that she is going to kill the King, but she feels that she's too feminine to do so. She calls among spirits and tells them to “unsex me here” (48) She says this because she feels the need to get rid of her natural female and maternal qualities to be filled with “direst cruelty” which is a trait that apparently only men can have in her mind.…

Sharing his plan with Lady Macbeth, the would-be queen, shows he hoped “it would find welcome lodgement with her,” and she would encourage his greed for more power (Flathe 2). Realizing it is against his morals, Macbeth tries to back out of the murder plan but he is “charged with cowardice” by Lady Macbeth (Richardson 1). She scolds him for being too frightened to achieve his goal to become king and not being “the same in thine own act and valor as thou art in desire” (1.7.40-41). This accusation spurs his ambition and his greed, so he murders Duncan, knowing the prophecies are on his side. By committing this crime, Macbeth destroys a bond with a parent-like figure and violates the “powers of [his] own superego, or conscience” (Reid 5).…

Macbeth gets quite agitated about what he has just done, and once again Lady Macbeth establishes her role as the more dominant figure, and tries to diffuse and calm the situation down. She tells Macbeth “Consider it not so deeply”, which means that the deed has been done, so just try and forget about it. Although Lady Macbeth seems to be very calm and calculated, I feel that she is not only trying to convince Macbeth that the part they played in Duncan’s death is not so significant, but she is also trying to convince herself. Perhaps this is the first sign that Lady Macbeth is not the dominant ruthless, unemotional person that she thinks she is, and cannot cope with taking charge of the situation.…

Macbeth had decided not to execute King Duncan and told her not to continue with the deed, instead of ending the plans she replied with a ‘motivational speech’ which then changed Macbeth’s mind. In the speech, Lady Macbeth verbally attacks Macbeth by testing his masculinity and also linking it back to personal attacks such as when she say she would smash her own son's brain then back out of this deed. Macbeth was more motivated to kill King Duncan after she said, “What beast was ’t, then, That made you break this enterprise to me?…
