Lady Macbeth: The Tragic Hero In William Shakespeare's Play

Macbeth is a play written by William Shakespeare. Macbeth falls under the genre of a tragedy. Along with the genre being a tragedy we have many tragic heroes in the story. The main tragic hero would be the main character, Macbeth. The entire play is based on the life of Macbeth and his actions. Macbeth is married to a woman referred to as, Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is also a tragic hero. Due to the play being mainly about Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is overshadowed a little bit. She appears in the play in a few scenes but is never the true focus of the act. With all of that kept in mind she still plays an important part in the play. She starts the scene off inside of Macbeth’s castle. When she first enters the scene she shows traits of a tragic hero by being of a high rank. We know she is of high rank because she is the wife of Macbeth who is a thane and she is also living inside of a castle. She enters the scene with a note. The note is from Macbeth telling her about what had happened to him and that he is now on his way home. The note was sent ahead of Macbeth but failed to reach Lady Macbeth before Macbeth showed up with some guests. The start of the letter says, “They met me in the day of success, and I have learned by the perfectest report they have more in them than mortal knowledge.” (1.5. 1-3). Macbeth mentions to his wife, in the letter, that he had an encounter with three “weird sisters” (1.5. 8) and that these women have told him a prophecy that he will become Thane of Cawdor and then eventual climb the latter to become king. Lady Macbeth starts her plan off by poisoning the guards. Lady Macbeth does a good job at taking the gurards out and this is eveident when she says, “Do mock their charge with snores. I have drugged their possets, That death and nature do contend about them, Whether they live or die” (2.2. 6-9). She is able to sneak into the Duncan’s room without anyone knowing but is unable to go through with the dead. Lady Macbeth states, “He could not miss 'em. Had he not resembled My father as he slept, I had done ’t.” (2.2. 12-13). Lady Macbeth was so hell bent on killing Duncan that she completely lost touch with her humanity. The only thing that stopped her was the reality, at his bedside, that he reminded her of her own father which caused to her understand what she was doing and stop herself from committing the deed. After she attempts to kill Duncan, and fails, begins her fall. She starts to hear noises and voices that are not there. Macbeth ends up killing Duncan and bringing the daggers back with him. Lady Macbeth then takes the daggers and uses them to frame the guards outside of Duncan’s room. Once she returns both she and Macbeth become paranoid. They start hearing noises and voices that aren’t really there. Eventually they both make it back to bed and sleep it off until
