Elena Gilbert, the lead character on The Vampire Diaries, once said, “You weren’t born evil. Your life made you that way” to her enemy Katherine Pierce. This popular quote is an example of how the people or things that surround someone can influence them to do evil things. For instance, Macbeth, from William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, wasn’t born evil. Certain things impacted him and his future. Like the obstacles that teenagers these days face, Macbeth also goes through peer pressure. He strides to do his best to prove that he is capable of being the King of Scotland. When the witches told Macbeth the prophecies revealing his future, the first person he told was Lady Macbeth, his wife. Macbeth wrote to her in a letter saying, “Whiles I stood rapt in the wonder of it, came missives from the king, who all-hailed me ‘Thane of Cawdor;’ by which title, before, these weird sisters saluted me, and referred me to the coming on of time, with ‘Hail, king that shalt be!’ This have I thought good to deliver thee, my dearest partner of greatness, that thou mightst not lose the dues of rejoicing, by being ignorant of what greatness is promised thee” (I.v). Macbeth is a character that easily believes in things. This quote is an example of this character trait. Macbeth quickly told his wife the news, and messing with fate without knowing it. However, the witches forced this action upon Macbeth. Hecate, the head witch said “And that distill’d by magic sleights shall raise such artificial sprites as by the strength of their illusion shall draw him on to his confusion: He shall spurn fate, scorn death, and bear he hopes ‘bove wisdom, grace and fear. And you all know, security is mortals’ chiefest enemy” (III.v). This quote is a representation of how the three witches played games with Macbeth. Macbeth thrived to prove to Lady Macbeth that he could be a man and greater than her late husband. Macbeth also acted upon false hope that was purposely planted by the witches, who knew the outcome of him knowing the future. In the real world, nobody really knows the future or what’s to come. However, if one did know that they were going to die the next day, they would live like it’s their last day, because it is. Knowing the future can affect how one lives, and how others live. What Macbeth didn’t understand was that in the end, fate is fate.
