Lady Macbeth is Responsible for Duncan's Murder The definition of evil is “morally bad or wrong; wicked” (“Evil”). Lady Macbeth is portrayed as a character who is extremely evil in comparison to her husband, Macbeth. Although Macbeth is influenced to commit a crime, he is far less impulsive about the murder than his wife. Macbeth was doubtful about executing the murder but every time he would have second thoughts, Lady Macbeth manipulated him into thinking it was a foremost importance to kill Duncan. From the moment she read Macbeth’s letter, she was determined that her goal must be achieved and will not let anyone get in her way. “Ambition could cause people to go over limits. Sometimes the ambition is so big that people hurt themselves and others while trying to reach a goal.” (Hernandez) Lady Macbeth’s ambition exceeded and went over the limits, which is what lead to Duncan's death and her eventual downfall. Even while Macbeth hesitates and is vacillating with the plan, she never has second thoughts and is certain that she is able to get away with the assassination. Unlike Macbeth, she does not need anyone to urge her on about the killing because she is destined that the plan will work so Macbeth will be able to become the king. Macbeth was not concerned about becoming the new king in the beginning of the play and he was significantly lacking the ambition that Lady Macbeth has, so therefore it was her idea and fulfillment that led to him actually murdering King Duncan in the first place. Lady Macbeth commenced the actions which ultimately lead Macbeth committing the crimes that he did. For example, Macbeth being the cause for the death of Banquo and Macduff. His soliloquy showed that he thought of several reasons why he should not murder the king, for example King Duncan trusted Macbeth and thought of him as a man of honor. He also feels that Duncan does not deserve it because he has been nothing but kind and pleasant to Macbeth which is the reasoning behind why he feels guilty in progressing with the plan. Macbeth has been loyal to him and served in many battles which proves he was a very trustworthy man. When Lady Macbeth discovers her husbands doubts in proceeding with the plan she becomes furious and calls him a coward. She manipulates Macbeth by insulting his manhood and questioning his courage. His wife gave him false hope that their plan will succeed and that he will become the king without any complications or trouble.
