Even a good man could have an evil side. The renowned author, William Shakespeare, wrote a drama entitled “The Tragedy of Macbeth” which took place in Scotland. In the play, Macbeth had a strong desire to become king. He even went to extremes to kill Duncan, Banquo and Macduff’s family to reach his goal. A common theme found in the play is Good vs. Evil, and this theme is evident through the characters Macbeth, Witches, Lady Macbeth and Banquo.
To begin with, one example of good vs. evil is the three witches and the important roles they play in “Macbeth”. These deceiving sisters are very evil and are also known as the “weird sisters”. In Act I the witches say, “Fair is foul, and foul is fair hover through the fog and filthy air.”, (scn i,

In a different view, Lady Macbeth points out the good in her husband after receiving a letter from Macbeth informing her of his new promotion to Throne of Cawdor. After reading the letter Macbeth gave her, Lady Macbeth says, “Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be what thou art promised. Yet I do fear thy nature. It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness.” (Act I, scn v, ln 15-17) In a simpler translation, Lady Macbeth is pointing out the good in Macbeth and saying that his kindness causes her to question his ability to fight for the throne. Lady Macbeth drunken the draggers and maded them look as if they killed Banquo. Macbeth’s good side would not let him finish the job so Lady Macbeth had to step in and finish through with his plan for him. (Act II, scn ii, ln 53-56) “Give me the draggers. The sleeping and the dead are but as pictures.’Tis the eye of childhood that fears a painted devil. If he do bleed, I’ll gild the faces of the grooms withal, for it must seem their guilt.” It is obvious that Macbeth is power hungry and will do evil to get his way, but still has a good side to …show more content…
As mentioned, the witches told him that he would soon be the king of Scotland. In an attempt to fulfill the witches’ prophecies, Macbeth hires two murders and tells them about his plan, which will only work if they kill Banquo and anyone that is with him, even if it is his son Fleance. Macbeth says, “The moment on ‘t: for ‘t must be done tonight…Fleance his son, that keeps him company.” (Act III, scn I, ln 131-135) His ambition to become king prompted him to take evil action.
