Macbeth is the main character in the play, and probably is the most interesting character as well. His character develops throughout the play in a slow decent into a sort of madness as the play progresses, starting as an honorable noble and ending the play a cold blooded killer with only a loose grasp on reality. Accompanying this transition is a complex inner dialogue where Macbeth shows both extreme ambition and willingness to do anything, but also guilt for his abhorrent actions. Macbeth notably also maintains himself as a very strong and courageous character from the start of the play to the end, both starting and ending the play in personal combat.
Lady Macbeth
Lady Macbeth is a similarly interesting character to Macbeth, one who shares a similar amount of character development as the play goes on, although not in the same way as Macbeth. Lady Macbeth initially manipulates Macbeth into killing Duncan so he can secure the throne, and she seems unfiltered by the action as it happens, initially showing her ambition and unwavering personality. But as the play progresses she becomes increasingly weak and frail, eventually taking her own life. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth end up following sort of opposite character paths, which likely intended to be ironic as their characters sort of end up switching roles from the start to the end of the play.

Banquo is a character that it is easy to have sympathy
