At the beginning of Macbeth the audience is introduced to Lady Macbeth (Macbeth’s wife), who starts off innocent, until reading the letter from Macbeth, telling her about the witches' prophecies. She quickly changes and becomes cold-blooded and sees an opportunity to start plotting against Duncan. Lady Macbeth knows that in order for her husband to be the king, she will do anything in her power to make that happen. After Macbeth murders Duncan, he begins to really struggle with what he has just done, when Lady Macbeth tells him, “consider it not so deeply”, when he panics about not being able to say the word “amen” (2.2.41). His anxiety lingers, and when she discovers that Macbeth did not leave the bloody murder weapons with Duncan’s servants, she criticizes him. After when Lady Macbeth places the daggers in the right spot, she tells him, “My hands are of your colour,but I shame to wear a heart so white” (2.2.82-83). She is saying that her hands are white, but she would be ashamed to have a heart as white as Macbeth’s, meaning he is a coward.
