Question 8:
Lady Macbeths fears do contradict with what we’ve already learnt about Macbeth. Macbeth is labelled as an extremely skilled soldier who has mastered the art of the sword and combat. He is also described as a noble and loyal person and is a ruthless killer on the battle field. It is because of these traits, it resulted in him becoming a thane Cawdor. In act 1 scene 5 she says “It is too full o’ the milk of human kindness.” The quote is extremely ironic and it implies that Lady Macbeth has little faith and doesn’t believe that a brutal killer such as Macbeth who has just won a battle against the Norwegians, isn’t brave enough to murder one person. This text contradicts his character because Macbeth is a soldier and their main job is to kill.

She targets his masculinity with taunts through manipulation. She also graphically paints horrible images in his mind to force him to kill the king. She says “When you durst do it, then you were a man.” She is saying that you will only become a man once you murder king Duncan. This quote belittles him by taunting him by implying that only true men could kill him, and are you truly a man if you can’t even do the easy deed? This forces him to take action because is it insulting his manliness. Lady Macbeth also graphically paints an image to Macbeth that she would kill her own children, trying to manipulate him to murdering the king. But in Lady Macbeths original plan, she was going to kill king Duncan herself. She asks the spirits to “Unsex her”, meaning to make her hard and cruel and to get rid of her womanliness so could have the strength to kill Duncan herself. Lady Macbeth is truly a coward on the inside and is too frightened to kill the king herself so she taunts Macbeth to do it instead. She looks as though she wants Macbeth to be king more than he does
