Lady Liberty, or commonly known as the Statue of Liberty, was given to the United States from France in 1886. Being the most potent of American symbols, her best well-known depiction is a woman with white European features. Going against the common norm, an article titled “Lady Liberty Will Be a Black Woman on a U.S. Coin”, published by the New York Times on January 13 of 2017, announced that the United States Mint will release a commemorative gold coin in April of 2017 that depicts Lady Liberty as a black woman.
