He claimed to have created the name “Lady Gaga” after the Queen song “Radio Gaga.” A text message sent between the two had changed “radio” to “lady” and Gaga replied with “That’s it.” “ Don’t ever call me Stefani again.” A couple months after this, she was signed to Def Jam but unfortunately dropped by the label exactly three months later. Devastated, Gaga returned back home and eventually found another job as a songwriter for celebrities like Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and The Pussycat Dolls. Anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock for the past thirty years (on that note, even ten years) acknowledges that the world has changed radically. From the rise and further advancement of computers, to the increasing prevalence of bioengineering, and even something as simple as how people discuss things all demonstrate that this is a radically different world from my parents, my grandparents and my great grandparents. With these innovations, problems both contemporary and archaic have reared their ugly heads; one of the greatest of these issues is bullying. This endearing issue, something in which we all have encountered by some means, and by some form, plays a massive role in our world today. Although it seems like this issue is something with no solution, many resources that have been acquired (from our innovations to the literature that has been created by great minds) prove that there are ideas about how to make this issue cease to exist.…

Emily Bazelon discussed the national topic of bullying in her lecture, “Sticks and Stones” Defeating the Culture of Bullying”. Bazelon starts by defining bullying as a commonly misunderstood concept. She argues that not all conflicts between children are considered bullying. Bullying, Bazelon believes, should be a narrow term, which excludes drama or regular two-seeded conflict; consequently, she regards bullying as repetitive behavior that is a “campaign to make someone miserable”. In other words, bullying is not a fight; it is one-sided.…

Bullying: Why It Happens The documentary Bully, directed by Lee Hirsch argues that bullying is an on-growing social problem occurring in America that is not receiving the acknowledgment it deserves. The film shows how oblivious adults ignore the issue and classify it as a normality, while also showing a clear insight to the mental and physical abuse kids face everyday. Hirsch supports his argument with his successful use of ethos, logos and pathos by weaving together the stories of five different families who have first hand experience with bullying, making them reliable sources. The directors purpose is to inform the audience on bullying and to create a new realization of this ongoing issue, so kids can rise above and empower one another…

The documentary, Bully, follows five children, from elementary school to high school, and offers an intimate viewpoint on the topic of bullying, and how it affects young children and their families. My overall reaction to this documentary was an initial feeling of sadness. Sadness for the children who have been affected by bullying in the documentary, and sadness for all of those who have been affected by bullying in their lives. This feeling soon turned into a concoction of disappointment, anger, and overall confusion. Disappointment and anger in the fact that children in today’s society feel the need to verbally and physically attack others, and disappointment in the way that bullying is handled by teachers, parents, and administration.…

Humanity, nowadays, cares nothing for others, only for themselves due to their mentality that is to see only what influences them and believe it is the truth. Elie Wiesel once declared, “When human lives are endangered, when humans dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Where men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place- at that moment- become the center of the universe.” Today I am not responding as a student knowledgeable to the unfortunate events, but as a young person of the twenty-first century, Elie Wiesel is indeed correct.…
