Lady Capulet Monologue

Citizens of fair Verona, imagine that your only daughter was found dead in the arms of your enemy, imagine that it was her own hand that stabbed the dagger into her heart, imagine hearing about her secret relationship with the Montague, who killed her beloved cousin in cold blood. I, Lady Capulet, the mother of this poor child who I loved unconditionally, have been accused of negligence leading to the manslaughter of Juliet Capulet. I come before you, dismayed and horrified at the allegation made against me, such a crime as this would contradict my nature as a loving mother. If only I knew how she felt, I could have helped, I could have understood her feelings and guided her through it. She should have told me. But she didn’t. Instead, she was naive and too passionate for her own good. Their love was like the wind, fleeting and destructive. I loved my daughter with all my heart but it is clear that she should not have been left alone without advice and guidance from her father or I. How could I have done been there for her when I thought of Romeo was her enemy? All I knew was that Romeo had no understanding of honor, Romeo was a shriveling coward as he fled the scene after slaying Tybalt. After our family heard the dreadful news, I went to Juliet to comfort her. I found Juliet drowned in a sea of grief and presumed it was for Tybalt. Expecting a small bubble of joy, I decided to share the glorious news that she was to marry Paris in the next few days. Her reaction was the last I expected.
