Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College. The goal being, to join an enrichment and or educational program that targeted students transitioning from elementary school to middle school. For example, one of the events we played with the mentees was a “Game of Life” that specifically taught the girls how to save money and distinguish between wants and needs. Another example was when we educated the girls on the importance of preserving and improving the communities around them by making sandwiches for the homeless and showing them the importance of recycling. At the end of these activities, the mentees would come back the next week and tell us how they applied it to their own lives.
