Lady Brett Ashley Quotes

Lady Brett Ashley contrasts between feminine and masculine qualities in the book The Sun Also Rises. Feminine means having woman qualities and masculine means having man qualities. Brett seems to have both qualities of a woman and a man. Lady Brett Ashley’s first true love died during World War 1. Brett became a very independent woman after her husband had died. She is a very attractive woman who gains the attention of anyone she wants. In today’s society we would label Brett as a harlot. Lady Brett Ashley shows in the story that she is a very strong and confident lady looking for what she calls “love”. Though Lady Brett Ashley may get all of the men's attention -even the ones who fall in love with her- she can’t ever seem to fully commit …show more content…
46-47). This proves that Brett chooses wealth over love and that she has done it with every single man she has been with since her first husband passed away. Robert Cohn expresses his “love” for Brett throughout the book. No matter how many times Brett pushes him away and puts him down, he still comes crawling back to her. Brett has all the men that she knows, chasing after her. Men like, Jake, Robert Cohn, Michael, Pedro Romero, and the Count. With all of these men crawling at her feet, she still has yet had any real emotional feelings with any of them.
Lady Brett Ashley has never found love and someone to settle down with and be happy. Jake and Brett have always has some sort of emotional connection but because Brett wants a physical connection other than kissing, they can’t work out. So at this point in the story, love to Brett at this stage in her life means nothing. Love is difficult to define. It is much more than physical attraction. Love is strength with weaknesses and is something that can never truly be defined. According to C.E.org “ Love is a person’s psychological strength which makes the person stronger through the harmonization of the personality, through obtaining a constant source of positive emotions”. With that being said, Lady Brett searches for love through money and physical desire. Brett is the type of woman we would call “modern”. A “wanna be” rich women with a crazy passion for sex. Throughout the story, Brett is terminally unhappy and always wanting someone else. As stated before, though Brett can be seen as “modern”, she is still miserable because she has always “done what ‘she’ wanted” (Hemingway, pg. 188) and she finds it impossible to change her way of thinking about

It seems by the end of the novel, Jake and Brett are the only ones who seem to have come to terms with who they are and who they have become. It is a significant theme portrayed throughout the novel and helps to showcase the faults in misconceiving this particular affection. The main characters, Dick Diver, Nicole Diver, and Rosemary Hoyt, each express this phenomenon with their intertwining relationships. They each seek their own quintessential version of happiness and hope to achieve this by seeking partners who exemplify these qualities.…
