The setting: St. Francis Xavier High School, a Catholic, all boys college preparatory. Plot Twist: It’s located in Sacramento, California. When I first saw the trailer for Lady Bird, I was initially disregarded the film as a cliche, sappy coming-of age movie. A few weeks later, after the recommendation of my sister who pointed out its relevance to me because the movie is set in a Catholic high school, I buckled down to watch it on 123movies.net. What I was treated to was a complex story of a young girl struggling to find her place in the world, a movie equally heartfelt yet hilariously specific. The frighteningly accurate portrayal of Catholic education, teen angst, and value of home makes Lady Bird one of the greatest movies of 2017.

Every piece of the environment like the many posters that hung in Lady Bird’s room or the depth and roundness of each supporting character made the movie a truly immersive experience. Each character had a story, like how Julie harbored a secret affection for her math teacher, but each subplot did not distract from the overarching storyline of a mother and daughter.
One of the film’s underlying motifs, the love of home, has allowed me to appreciate my hometown of Cincinnati. Sacramento is presented as a beautiful, unique community that Lady Bird gradually begins to love as the movie progresses. I was refreshed to see a smaller town portrayed on screen as opposed to the big cities or beachs often portrayed in the media.
